Dangerous fumes at a Midtown renovation site caused three construction workers to fall ill on February 24, 2016. According to a New York Fire Department spokesperson, one of the workers is in critical condition and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital. The other two construction workers suffered minor injuries.
The renovation site is located at 741 Eighth Avenue, in the Midtown area of Manhattan. Once constructed, the site will be a 31-story Hotel Riu Plaza New York Times Square, part of an international Spanish hotel chain. This most recent incident has not been the first construction accident on site. In 2015, a construction worker fell to his death in an elevator. The New York Daily News reported that the elevator had electrical equipment which was “unapproved, unsafe, [and] unsuitable.” The property owner was issued two citations for New York City Code violations.
Construction accidents have continued to increase in New York City. Many of the incidents could have been avoided with proper training, adequate safety gear and equipment, and thorough inspections. To remedy this, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has instituted stricter enforcement of codes on construction sites. The city plans to hire around 100 new inspectors and fines for construction site violations will be “quadrupled.”
